If you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about then mosey on over to the Team Fortress 2 blog and check out their latest announcement.
It's clear that the TF2 team love experimenting with their game mechanics, maps and items, but doing so on an established product with millions of active players must be an extremely daunting task.
Their solution? To have a seperate open beta version of TF2 available over Steam that the developers can mess about with as much as they want without fear of accidentally antagonizing any gamer who just wants a normal match. Changes that survive the beta will then presumably be folded back into the regular Team Fortress 2 experience.
Currently the beta features multiple, differently nerfed versions of the Heavy's Natascha Minigun for testers to play with, plus numerous tweaked version of the Gorge and Granary maps.
I'm not surprised to see them playing around with Natascha, as both the developers (well, Robin Walker) and the community have been pretty vocal in the past about how darned annoying that slow down effect is. Fingers crossed this new beta system will allow them to experiment to their heart's content until they finally get her just right.
