Hello all. Been awhile.
Sorry for the delay, but had many curve-balls tossed my way the past couple months. The best thing is, I'm having a baby. April thirtieth. Crazy, eh? But since most of the staffers seem AWOL due to random changes in lifestyle, I'll pick up the slack this time. Hell, the Limey picked up mine. Some other good news is that during this madness I've had a chance to play many different games, which I'll be covering the next couple of days.
Today's choice cut is Borderlands, and a great choice it is. This game has single-handedly been devouring my late nights and pissing my wife off in one fell swoop. The number of randomly generated guns runs somewhere around three million, four hundred thousand guns. As you slay people and creatures of all sorts, they drop random amounts of cash, guns, health, mods and grenades.
This simple formula is one half of what makes this game so addictive. RPG elements added to a beautiful, cell-shaded FPS is what consists of the other half. Head-shots are considered critical hits, and the varying types of weapons can do additional damage; corrosive, explosive, flaming and electrical elements change it up. Hit someone with a corrosive elemental weapon, there's a chance it will afflict them and keep hurting them even when you're ducking and recovering.
To be honest, it's been a long time since any sort of FPS has gotten me this hooked. On top of it being so fun, it only gets better when a friend hops in on the action. When someone joins, the enemies get stronger and the loot gets better. So, it doesn't get any easier, but it's worth every second. Gearbox knew what they were doing from the beginning with this game.
So, in closing, this game is absolutely worth it for whatever platform you can get it on. PS3, X-Box 360, or PC. Definitely a 5 out of 5, this one.
One more thing before I close; recently announced was Resident Evil 5: Alternate Edition. This will have about two additional hours of gameplay, intercut as flashbacks from when Chris and Jill sought to apprehend Spencer in his mansion which (surprise, surprise) is a replica of the estate from Resident Evil. It will be made to coincide with the release of the motion-sensitive PS3 wand. So, another hundred or so dollars eaten on the silly peripheral and game I already own. Weak. But, I'm a consumer whore, so Sony and Capcom, congrats on a pocket well picked.
Within the next day or two I'll toss up a rant about Batman. I'd go off about Uncharted 2, but I've barely scratched the surface. Thus far though, it's fantastic.
Hit you up soon.
